DOLLS AND BEARS FEATURED IN THE LONELY DOLL® BOOKS
This celebrated series features a doll called Edith and her friends Mr. Bear and Little Bear. Edith is a felt Lenci Doll dating from Dare's childhood in the 1920s. Dare sewed all Edith's outfits for the books on a child's toy sewing machine. She also repainted Edith's face, and changed her eye color to blue.

Mr. Bear was made by Schuco, and Little Bear was a special edition Steiff "Jackie Bear". Both bears were bought at FAO Schwarz toy store in New York in the 1950s.

Antique Lenci dolls similar to Edith can be found at doll auctions and on eBay. There is an informative site about Lenci dolls at www.lenci-dolls.net.

R. John Wright www.rjohnwright.com, the master of the modern felt doll, has created a magnificent Edith doll for 2008. She is absolutely enchanting in every detail, and is the first Edith doll ever done in her actual size! This collector's dream is available exclusively at The Toy Shoppe www.thetoyshoppe.com

The Madame Alexander Doll Company has a line of Edith dolls from "The Lonely Doll" ® series in both wood and vinyl. Visit The Toy Shoppe online for more Edith and Little Bear dolls from Haut Melton® and Kids At Heart ® as well as the Alexander collection.

OTHER OUT-OF-PRINT BOOKS BY DARE WRIGHT
In addition to The Lonely Doll® books, Dare wrote two books, "The Little One" and "Take Me Home", featuring a tiny bisque doll named Persis.

Another series focused on educating children about animals. The "Look At" series includes: "Look At A Gull", "Look At A Calf", "Look At A Colt", and "Look At A Kitten". Another animal book was "The Kitten's Little Boy".

In her fairytale book "Lona", Dare photographed both a long-limbed Lenci doll from her childhood and herself as the title character. The magical effects in the photos are astounding, particularly considering that they were shot long before the days of digital photo manipulation.

"Date With London" was a departure from Dare's usual format. It was intended to be the first book of a "Date With…" series featuring two children visiting the world's capital cities.

UNPUBLISHED
Dare wrote and photographed two unpublished books. The first, featuring the little doll Persis and a girl called Brett, was titled "Make Me Real." This was published for the first time in 2007. The second, "Ocracoke In The Fifties," featured the land and inhabitants of this remote North Carolina island. The rough manuscript and photos that Dare left were edited and published for the first time in 2006.

NEW TITLES
There is a new book featuring Edith and The Bears that continues The Lonely Doll® series. Authored and photographed by Brook Ashley, Brett Wilbur and John Ogilvie, "The Lonely Doll Makes New Friends" is the first Lonely Doll® story shot in color. Click here to see more photos from this new book.

For the very young audience, we are planning a new series of board books featuring Little Bear.
